How to Start / Make a Business Website

The process of starting a business website is similar to starting any kind of a website. Your will need to register a domain name and get on a web hosting plan. My recommendation is to get a Linux-based hosting server.

Just like any other business, a website itself can be the business. As an example, Website Homework (this website) is my content-based website. I write educational content for this website such as the article you are reading right now and generate a passive income from Google AdSense ads. Incidentally, sometimes the website generates web design leads and people ask me to design websites for them, but I don’t consider that the main purpose of this website.

Before you attempt building your website either yourself or with the help of a website builder, you need to figure out whether your website itself is the business you are running, or whether you are planning on making a website for an already existing business.

If the website itself is not the primary business, do not start a website before you actually have your business running. Many people don’t know that simply building a website, when its brand new, will not help to actually generate new business. At that point you should already have some type of things happening for you.

First think about whether your website is a business in itself. An example of that would be Google or eBay or even Amazon. Making this decision will completely redefine what your following actions should be whichever choice you make.

Having said this, this decision still depends partially on what type of a business it is you’re trying to start. If your business idea is an e-commerce website and you are looking to start a web store to promote and sell your products, then you may consider building the website simultaneously while preparing the products for shipping.

Remember that merely building the website is not going to take care of your business. Marketing an e-commerce website is a much more difficult task than marketing a content-based website. In this case, some people start writing articles on the subjects related to the products being sold on the site. When people search for information on those subjects they are likely to discover your store. This targeted traffic could convert into sales.
